About Book

Book Description
This is an exploration of the lives and writings of early English utilitarianism's three main proponents: Bentham, James Mill and John Stuart Mill. It also sketches more broadly the relation of the three to the wider trends in English political and philosophical thought in the 18th and 19th centuries. Written in 1900, towards the end of Stephen's life, it was described by the DNB (after his death) as a work that 'abounds in happy characterisation of movements and men'.
