This book is derived from the classic Chinese novel "Journey to the West", and is a delightful introduction to the adventures of Sun Wukong, aka the Monkey King, a creature of supernatural powers, including the ability of shapeshifting (the 72 transformations). It combines an exciting story with wonderful artwork to entertain children of all ages. Sun Wukung is a disciple of Xuanzang, a buddhist monk in the time of the Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.) who was on a mission to secure sacred sciptures from India. The Journey to the Wsst has many similar tales of how the Monkey King, with the help of two other supernatural disciples, rescues Xuanzang from fantastic demons, each bent on eating the monk. Enjoy this book and I surely believe your children will be fascinated by it as well. The downside, unfortunately, is that there are no easy-to-read translations of the full story. The version I read translated 100 chapters in four volumes. It would make a good book report for a middle or high school English class, but tough reading for children younger than that age.
