Grade 9&Up--This book presents biographical information first for Elizabeth Barrett Browning and then for her husband, Robert Browning. It describes their early lives, education, literary beginnings, correspondence, meeting, and subsequent marriage. After their marriage, the couple traveled first to Paris, then to Italy where they lived on and off for many years. The rest of the book is devoted to their publications. The text is filled with long, helpful summaries and critique. In addition, the poems are discussed against the backdrop of the Brownings' lives, which will make it easier for students to understand and analyze their work. Excerpts from letters are included. This handsome book contains quality reproductions of artwork, first drafts, and black-and-white photographs. A valuable resource for literature collections as well as for fans of these poets.

Review
"Poetry lovers and teachers of poetry will enjoy this edition of the lives and loves of two of the world's best-known poets.... The research used on these poets is authoritative and well documented. This book, unlike some, is not dry and dull but rather makes the people come off the pages. Students who read this book or simply read sections of it will learn more about this period and the people mentioned in the passages."--Christian Library Journal

Book Description
"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning captures the remarkable love story of the renowned poets behind these famous words, from their dramatic elopement in 1846 to Elizabeth's tragic death in 1861. Their romance began with a letter from Robert admiring Elizabeth's highly acclaimed book, Poems. When her father disapproved, they married in secret and boldly moved to Florence, Italy. Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning describes how their love and lives flourished there, producing one son, writing some of their most renowned works, and maintaining friendships with some of the most prominent literati of their time, including John Ruskin, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and William Makepeace Thackeray.
