Her fame rests on her historical romance novels. The story begins: The halls glowed in the light of a myriad candles; the footmen were running hither and thither, giving a last touch to chairs and tables; the court gardener cast a last critical glance at the groups of plants he had been arranging in the saloons; and, in the picture gallery, the majordomo was decorating the tables destined today to furnish especially rich enjoyment to the queen's guests. The king made no reply; his mistrust was scornfully exhibited. He thought that the queen believed him to be suffering and confined to his room. He did not doubt for a moment that she had sent for the prince, and Frederick was there to see if the life of the king was not in danger; if the throne of Prussia would not soon be empty, and ready for its successor.
