1887. Muhlbach is the pseudonym of Mrs. Luise Mundt. Writing as Muhlbach she produced more than fifty novels and her works in their entirety comprise almost one hundred volumes. Her fame rests on her historical romance novels. The story begins: The halls glowed in the light of a myriad candles; the footmen were running hither and thither, giving a last touch to chairs and tables; the court gardener cast a last critical glance at the groups of plants he had been arranging in the saloons; and, in the picture gallery, the majordomo was decorating the tables destined today to furnish especially rich enjoyment to the queen's guests. The king made no reply; his mistrust was scornfully exhibited. He thought that the queen believed him to be suffering and confined to his room. He did not doubt for a moment that she had sent for the prince, and Frederick was there to see if the life of the king was not in danger; if the throne of Prussia would not soon be empty, and ready for its successor.
