About the Author
Robert M. Ballantyne was born in Edinburgh in 1825 to the same family that published Walter Scott. After the financial crash of 1826, Ballantyne sought work and supported his mother and five sisters for 15 years. He worked as a clerk for the Hudson's Bay Company at the Red River settlement in northern Canada for seven years, returning to Edinburgh in 1848. He worked as a clerk with the North British Railway until 1852, when he became a partner in the publishing firm of Thomas Constable. He wrote over 75 books before his death in 1894.
