About Book

Book Description
Arthur Custance's magnum opus The Seed of the Woman is once again available- this time to a new generation of readers. Although originally published in 1980, this exhaustive study into the physiology of redemption- the part played by the physical body- is of timeless relevance.

Dr. Custance was not seeking to prove the fact of the creation of Adam, or the formation of Eve out of his body, or the literal fact of man's Fall by eating a forbidden fruit and his consequent loss of a potential physical immortality, or the truth of the virgin birth, or the unique circumstances surrounding the death of Jesus, or the reality of his bodily resurrection and ascension into heaven.

All these things he takes as established truths and he accepts this without equivocation. The thesis of this volume is that each of the historial facts which lie behind the creeds of the Christian faith is essential to the whole plan of redemption. The element of necessity attaches to every one of them. They form a kind of organic lifeline- a single thread of things causally related in such a way that to abandon any one of them is to destroy the rationale of the whole.

Men and women do not need to understand the "rationale" to be saved: but it is our privilege now to be able to see more clearly what God had to do to make salvation possible.

About the Author
Arthur C. Custance was born in England but came to Canada in 1928. He attended the University of Toronto where he was converted during his second year. Having studied a wide spectrum of subjects, he graduated with an honours M.A. in Hebrew and Greek and Cuneiform.

After WW II his biblical studies led to a keen interest in biblical archaeology and anthropology, especially as it related to human origins. He returned to the University of Toronto to pursue his Ph.D. but just before it was completed he was invited to become the Head of Human Engineering Laboratories at the Defence Research Board in Ottawa, finishing his Ph.D. at Ottawa University in 1959. Until retirement in 1970, he pursued research into thermal regulation in the human body during heat stress under combat conditions.

Dr. Custance's scientific research and experience provided a wonderful opportunity to apply a broad spectrum of science to the biblial studies which still formed his first love and major avocation. He published a series of monographs on the interface of faith and science in 1957 to 1972 entitled the Doorway Papers, and had written six books before his death in 1985.
