To quote from Lockhart’s introduction: "The intention of this publication is to furnish the English reader with some notion of that old Spanish minstrelsy, which has been preserved in the different Cancioneros and Romanceros of the sixteenth century." John Gibson Lockhart (1794-1854) was Sir Walter Scott's son-in-law and his biographer. He was educated at the University of Glasgow and Oxford. He was a classical scholar, a linguist and a lawyer. He wrote literary criticism, but he is known today for his memoir of Scott, which is widely considered second only to Boswell's biography of Johnson.
