The second of three books with Miss Mary Dana and Quincy Adams Sawyer as amateur detectives, the story centers on the intrigues and sinister goings-on in the village of Mason's Corner (later named Fernborough) near Boston, Massachusetts - a folksy book about the folks of New England and their antics. A short story collections, continuing the characters of Quincy Adams Sawyer but introducing elements of detection. Quincy Adams Sawyer was one of the earliest motorized detectives, and the basis for the 1912 silent film Quincy Adams Sawyer, starring John Bowers, Blanche Sweet and Lon Chaney. In 1922 it was the basis for a 1922 Metro-Sawyer-Lubin silent film.
