Principles of Global Security presents a broad picture of the future of international security, including the management of military forces, the handling of civil conflict, the control of mass destruction technology, and the central security relationships that affect prevailing practice. John D. Steinbruner, one of the nation's leading specialists on defense issues discusses the major implications for security policy resulting from the globalization of economic activity, particularly advances in information technology, population growth, and the uneven distribution of wealth. Steinbruner argues that the problems of security have been fundamentally altered by globalization. Principles of deterrence will have to be subordinated to the practice of reassurance if adequate standards of global security are to be achieved.
