In 1986, Viet Nam began to introduce sweeping liberalization in all sectors of its previously hard line, centrally planned and closed economy. Referred to as doi moi, this “renovation” has produced dramatic changes in the lives of Vietnamese farmers, workers and their households. Agricultural production has soared. This book draws upon original field surveys, historical documents, and census material to study the evolution of doi moi and its implications for the future development of Viet Nam.

About the Author
Peter Boothroyd is Director of the Center for Human Settlements at the University of British Columbia, Canada. Pham Xuam Nam is a Professor at the National Center for Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi, Viet Nam. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the Vietnam Social Science Review.
