First published in 1906, this is a sketch of the great Russian colony during what is now perceived to be one of the most critical periods of its history. Villari, a political writer of great insight and depth, spent several months in 1905 visiting every important center of political unrest in the South Caucasus, inquiring into the general conditions of the various countries that formed its complex whole. For this purpose he consulted "people of all classes, races, and religions, from Russian viceroy down to simple peasants, from the chief of the secret police to the Georgian revolutionary leaders." This book presents both a gripping eyewitness account and an incisive political analysis of the growing turbulence in an area that was not only the route for Russia's advance to Persia but also a principal breeding ground for the Bolshevik Revolution. The book is illustrated by Villari's own photographs.
