The essays in Central Asian Monuments... refer to literary works, whose "enduring quality is manifested in repeated references to them by present-day Central Asians in their own historical, literary and even political writings" (P. V), an assertion Paksoy demonstrates in his introduction to a short story from 1980 by the Uzbek writer Alisher Ibadin, entitled "Sun is Also Fire" (Kuyas ham Alov). Written in Heroic style, and beginning with a reference to the eighth-century Orkhon inscriptions, the story deals with Turkic resistance to the Islamic conquests....
