It's based on the contents of preliminary beta releases from Microsoft. The preview readers get here is welcome, and it lets the curious know what's coming. This is straight, user-level documentation of Windows 98 itself and its companion accessories. You'll find out how to do such things as format a disk, copy a file, and get electronic mail with Outlook Express. Further, you'll get the latest on using new features of Windows 98, including the Active Desktop, ISDN line support, and the FAT32 file system. Unfortunately, the latest isn't very comprehensive--the coverage of ISDN here is cursory. The fact is, Windows 98 apparently isn't going to be drastically different from Windows 95. It will be a more robust system that resists bugs, the early reviewers say, but mostly it will be more of the same. For that reason, this book bears a strong resemblance to Windows 95 books for consumers (as opposed to books for software developers) and is adequate for the purpose it aims to serve. --David Wall
