This comedy features the \'gentleman\' friends Valentine and Proteus, turned rivals in the courtship of Silvia. The cunning Proteus has Valentine exiled, whereupon Silvia seeks Valentine in his forest hideout. Proteus follows; Valentine saves Silvia from his advances, and Proteus settles for Julia, his long-time lover.
