Andi Lane, activity director at a nursing home, Twilight Manor, in Sumter, South Carolina, is the character through whose eyes we experience life at Twilight Manor.

Andi faces a series of obstacles in her efforts to enhance the quality of life for nursing home residents. Some of these complications are personal harassment and injury and even death of some of the residents. The more she succeeds, the more complications occur.

About the Author
Gwen Austin was born in New York City in 1940, and raised in Queens Village, NY, New Canaan, CT, and Hinsdale, NH. She graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, OH in 1962 with a BA degree, as a psychology major.

Her career in recreation and therapeutic recreation began in 1962 when she was hired by the American National Red Cross and stationed at Madigan General Hospital near Tacoma, WA.

In 1963 Gwen married Gary Turbyfield, a US Army soldier who later transferred to the Air Force.

Military family life is a life of travel, and Gwen found positions whenever and where ever she could. These included jobs as activity director in skilled nursing facilities in Tacoma, WA and Sumter, SC.

From 1967-1968, Gwen served with the American Red Cross at the 12th Evacuation Hospital in Cu Chi, Vietnam, while her husband was stationed in Labrador.

After Gary's retirement from the Air Force in 1980, they moved to their chosen home in Tacoma, WA. Within fourteen months, Gary was dead of a heart attack.

Gwen says, "I now live on a mini-tree farm with Mt. Rainier National Park almost in my backyard. It is here that I write poems, short stories, articles and novels."

'Andi Lane strode toward Twilight Manor. Reminiscent of Tara in GONE WITH THE WIND glory days, the building gleamed white in the South Carolina morning sun. Empty rocking chairs, nudged by a ghost breeze, rocked to and fro on the second story balcony.

The wrought-iron gate latch was as hard to open today as it had been a week ago, on the day of her interview. Andi plucked one of the fragrant blossoms of the Japanese honeysuckle draping the fence along the walkway. She bit off its tip, savoring the sweet taste.

A black Sumter County Morgue van pulling away from Twilight Manor's side door reminded Andi that people do die in nursing homes.'
