About Book

From Library Journal
This is an intriguing book dealing with a theme often touched on by others, but rarely handled with Rheingold's insight and depth. He reviews and analyzes efforts in the area of intellect augmentationwork that has its roots in the early years of computer development and continues today with research in information and communication science, and involves such names as Countess Lovelace, Turing, Hollerith, and Von Neumann. But Rheingold's treatment of Douglas Engelbart is the most impressive. Engelbart, a fascinating visionary, along with Vanevar Bush and J. C. R. Licklider, was one of the first individuals to recognize the potential of the computer to augment human intellect . He has worked steadily in this area, having invented the first ``mouse'' and done early work on screen presentation of output, windows, etc. This important and well-written book deserves to be widely read.
