About Book

From AudioFile
This classic sea yarn of 1903, in which a fairly stupid captain somehow pilots his steamer through a horrendous storm, is remarkable for its evocation of life aboard ship, its quirky eloquence, and its psychological insight. None of these qualities pertain to narrator Brick's reading. He is "phoning it in" here, an unusual defect in this usually excellent young reader. Review
"Conrad is quite simply the master of all who try to reflect the world of the sea in the mirror of the written word....No one has limned more vividly the courage, the skill, the dreams, and terrors of those who set out upon the waters. He is the Captain." -David Poyer, author of The Med.

Book Description
Written in 1903, Typhoon is one of Joseph Conrad's greatest works. All is well on board the steamer Nan Sham until a sudden drop in atmospheric pressure causes Captain MacWhirr to observe that there "must be some uncommonly dirty weather knocking about." With little more warning, the Nan Shan and its crew are plunged into battle with a storm of terrifying proportions.

JUKES was as ready a man as any half-dozen young mates that may be caught by casting a net upon the waters; and though he had been somewhat taken aback by the startling viciousness of the first squall, he had pulled himself together on the instant, had called out the hands and had rushed them along to secure such openings about the deck as had not been already battened down earlier in the evening.

From the Publisher
"If you liked The Perfect Storm, you will be blown away by Typhoon, Conrad's classic tale." -David Hagberg, author of White House
