About Book

From
Gr. 4-7. The authors do a good job of a taking a subject that is rife with conflict, duplicity, and ugly words and actions, including racial slurs and rape, and shaping it into a useful, informative book for middle-graders. The slim volume, part of the Events That Shaped America series, is attractively designed with plenty of crisply reproduced, black-and-white photos, and historical art, such as posters, in color. The writing is clear and the text doesn't pull punches as it explains what happened to the nine young African American men accused of raping two white women, while riding a freight train during the Depression. Sidebars offer information about Southern juries, protests across America, and the 1955 Emmett Till case. Other books in this series include The Atom Bomb Project and The Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention, by the same authors. A time line, a glossary, a bibliography, and a list of Web sites conclude each volume. Ilene Cooper
