Dally is identified on the title page as "Owner and Captain of the "Leila D" Steamboat, the First Steamboat Built and Operated on Leech Lake by a Private Individual." Dally moved from Putnam County, Illinois to Stearns County, Minnesota in 1856. He describes that trip, as well as a 500-mile trip down the Mississippi River in 1862, fighting the Sioux and other Indians in Minnesota, moose hunting, steamboating, and other interesting experiences in the West.
