About Book

Amazon.com
Laura Lemay's Teach Yourself Web Publishing with HTML 4 in 14 Days is an intimidatingly massive tome, but it's an excellent starting point for anyone serious about learning HTML. The title is potentially misleading as the HTML 4 coverage seems like an afterthought and doesn't appear in the 14-day course at all. Instead, HTML 4 appears in the second of two "Bonus Days." This is understandable, considering that a standard for HTML 4 hadn't been reached by the time of the book's publication date.

If you're looking for solid HTML 4 coverage, it might be best to look elsewhere or wait for the next Professional Reference Edition. If you need a complete tutorial on HTML and Web publishing from beginning to end, this remains a solid choice. The book assumes little previous knowledge, yet helps you master a number of HTML features, including typography, frames, tables, and forms. This guide also gives you a solid introduction to related topics that will quickly face almost everyone who develops a site: HTML authoring tools, Web graphics, multimedia, page design, JavaScript, CGI programming, plug-ins, security, and even Web server management. Many of these have been updated for the new edition. You may not be directly concerned with all these issues, but it's important to understand the role they play in the overall site. If one single book can give you an overview of the entire scope of site creation, this is it.
